How to properly check out your gutter system
December 18, 2014
Ideally, it is best to go ahead and check out your gutters twice a year; once in the fall before the cold winter months begin, and again before the heavy rains of spring return.
When being tasked with the chore of cleaning gutters (if you have to) make sure the gutters are attached well; No sagging gutters can be seen, all connections to the roofing are secure, and no holes or cracking can be seen in the gutters as well. You might want to check for pooling water around your gutters in addition to checking your downspouts for clogs. (This can be accomplished by dropping something metal down the downspout to see if it comes out on the other end.)
According to Inspections Unlimited, they state “Just like the roof or siding of a house, a working gutter system is an important component to your home’s exterior. Gutters are put in place to collect and direct the flow of rainwater away from a structure, which helps to protect against the possibility of water damage or flooding. Usually made from plastic or aluminum, gutters are generally easy to upkeep and maintain, but homeowners should be aware of the condition of their gutters to ensure they last. According to Inspections Unlimited founder and professional inspector Dan Lubbers, damaged gutters are a common find during a home inspection. There are specific points an Inspections Unlimited professional will check to make sure a home’s gutter system is working at its full potential.” To see more about Inspections Unlimited click Here.
Inspection of your gutters can ensure an ISSUE is spotted BEFORE it becomes a PROBLEM to your home.
Whether it’s leaking water in your basement, wood rot, or water damage to the foundation all of this can be avoided by maintaining your gutter system.
You might also consider installing a gutter protection system that protects your gutters year-round, keeps your gutters clog-free, and KEEPS YOU OFF THE LADDER.
