Seamless Gutters vs Regular Gutters

It’s time to replace your gutters! Believe it or not – fresh clean gutters can give your home a face lift – and even take on a new style. Bring on that curb appeal! But, first things first – seamless gutters vs regular gutters?

Advantages & Disadvantages of Regular Sectional Gutters

When we are talking about regular gutters – what we mean are gutters you buy at the hardware store in 10’ or 20’ sections. Before we get into the pros and cons, let’s first give a quick overview of sectional gutter options.

Vinyl Traditional Sectional Gutters

These are the cheapest option, $7.30-$10.70* for a 10-foot section. However, we recommend vinyl gutters to be a hard pass. Why? Vinyl does poorly in heat and cold – which in Kansas and Missouri is basically all the time. The lifespan of vinyl traditional gutters in the KC Metro can be as little as 3-5 years. Not worth your time or money.

Aluminum Traditional Gutters

The lifespan of an aluminum gutter is much better than vinyl. You should be able to expect at least 15 years for properly installed sectional aluminum gutters. Likely more than that if covered with a trustworthy gutter guard.

For 10-foot section aluminum gutters, these cost between $13.30 for a 5-inch gutter and $23.50 for a 6-inch gutter. (To best determine your gutter size see the article 6-inch vs 5-Inch gutter. )

Gutter Cover KC®’s recommendation: the average DIY installation gutter project needs 6-inch gutters.

This is because many homes in the Kansas City area have several rooflines that combine to deliver a heavy water flow to smaller sections of gutter. To make sure you have the capacity you need, a 6-inch gutter is simply the safer option.

Pros of Regular Gutters

  • DIY installation friendly
  • Low cost
  • Convenient – pick up at the local hardware store

Cons of Regular Gutters

  • Potential for leaks at every seam
  • If DIY – need additional specialized equipment like a gutter break, ladder, drill, etc
  • Requires research for proper installation – For example, gutters must be installed at a specific angle for the slope to direct water flow toward the downspout
  • Less attractive due to seams, potential for rust and leaks
  • Fewer options – color, shape (k-style vs round) and size (5”, 6”, 8”, etc.)

Regular Gutters Types and Leaking Seams

Just a quick note on leaking seams. Traditional gutters with seams do tend to be more problematic and have higher maintenance than seamless gutters.

For instance, if regular gutters are clogged or mis-sloped, the water that sits in the gutter will wear at the sealant in the seams. This leads to more leaks. They must be installed properly, cleaned regularly, and resealed from time to time.

Advantage and Disadvantages of a Seamless Gutter System

Seamless gutters are typically installed by a professional. The installer will come with a truck that has a gutter machine that will run the exact length of guttering to match the needs of your home. This means that only the corners will have seams. For this reason, seamless gutters last much longer (20-30+ years) as long as they are reasonably well cared for – via regular cleaning or installation of a reliable gutter cover.

Seamless Gutters Initial Cost

The average cost of seamless gutters varies widely, depending on things like the size of gutter you choose (5”, 6”, etc), what material you choose (aluminum, galvalume, copper, etc), quality of materials, quality of installation, warranties and guarantees, etc.

In Kansas City you likely find your cost between $10-$18 a linear foot for seamless aluminum gutter on a residential home.

Pros of Seamless Gutters

  • Professional installation – proper sloping = proper water flow
  • Custom fit
  • Seamless (except corners) – so less opportunities for leaks.
  • Longevity
  • Sleek and streamlined appearance
  • Dozens of color options
  • Available in aluminum, galvalume, and copper
  • Available in many sizes (5”, 6”, 8”, etc.)

Cons of Seamless Gutters

  • Seamless gutters require, in most cases, a higher investment

Seamless Gutters and Aesthetic Appeal

Seamless gutters offer clean lines. Uncomplicated, modern seamless gutters can change the face of your home.

Many homeowners use the new gutter color to create a more cohesive design. Others are using gutters as a statement piece by choosing black or copper, or by choosing European half-round gutters. Or both.

Additionally, with less leak potential – your siding, fascia and soffit will stay cleaner and healthier longer. Requiring less frequent painting and replacing.

Which is Better – Seamless Gutters vs Regular Gutters?

If you’re on a tight budget and you have access to a gutter break and have some construction know-how – traditional, seamed gutters might work just fine for you.

However, if any of the above is not true of you – the extra cost of professionally installed seamless gutters is worth every penny. Even if you’re on a tight budget,

We’re talking foundation damage and flooded basements

Seamless gutters not only require less maintenance and add peace of mind, but they also increase curb appeal. Streamlined continuous gutters that complement the color of your home well can act like a beautiful picture frame, making the home pop.

Not to mention protecting the home from water damage. Fewer leaks means a healthier, lower-maintenance home all around.
